Webasto Roof Systems Inc. is currently recruiting for a Product Designer located at their Auburn Hills Corporate Offices.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Create and verify part and assembly tolerance stacks ensuring that all critical fit areas have tolerance analysis performed and documented and are within manufacturing and assembly process capabilities
  • Ensure that critical dimension tolerances fall within manufacturing and assembly process capabilities
  • Develop basic and complex concept drawings
  • Review drawings to ensure that GD&T and datum selection meet design intent and correlate to program tolerance stacks
  • Work with designer engineer to achieve uniformity of design, material standards and specifications; insure strategy for design standardization is implemented and adhered to
  • Creation / development of, or utilization of outsource to create or assist in creating of, both basic and intricate detail drawings of components in a CAD environment
  • Maintain that master layouts and typical section drawings ensure that proper clearances to adjacent system components as well as to vehicles structure and interior components are preserved
  • Ensure that all assigned programs have a master layout assembly and typical section drawings, must keep maintained during the development phase of a program
  • Ensure that product designs are robust, high quality, cost effective, and meet or exceed engineering requirements
  • Assist DGL and/or EM in ensuring that CAD and Data Management systems are effective, efficient and meet performance requirements both internally at Webasto and externally at customers and suppliers
  • Defines all views, sections, dimensions, specifications, and materials required to produce a given part or assembly
  • Assist direction with suppliers and tool room to build prototypes
  • Work with supplier, PM, & PPE to establish and follow up on part delivery for builds as required
  • Establish production feasibility of designs working with suppliers, engineers and plant colleagues
  • Support work with layout inspector to verify prototypes; meet design intent
  • Support internal and external PDT meetings as schedules permit
  • Prepare engineering documentation including but not limited to DFMEA, DVP&R, drawings and design assumptions
  • Formally release all product requirements into the Webasto change management system
  • Establish test criteria for design validation and knowledge building sub-system test
  • Conduct appropriate engineering analysis and select or recommend materials
  • Conduct design studies to support cost reduction and new business development opportunities
  • Develop CAD components using the Global Skeleton methodology


Education & Experience:

  • Associates Degree in an Automotive Design related field of studypreferred; High School diploma/GED equivalent
  • 5+ years Automotive product design experience with CATIA in mechanical, industrial or materials engineering disciplines
  • Excellent math skills and knowledge of Descriptive geometry and Plain geometry
  • Good verbal, written, interpersonal, and organization skills
  • Thorough knowledge of CAD systems
  • Thorough knowledge of GD&T and part datum standards
  • Thorough knowledge of Die Construction and Assembly
  • Ability to design highly complex assemblies within CAD environment with minimal direction
  • Thorough knowledge of specific customer procedures preferred
